Desktop virtualization separates a desktop operating system and its applications from the physical device you access them on. The desktop itself runs centrally, on servers, in a datacenter, or in the cloud, and gets presented to you over a remoting protocol. The device becomes a viewer. The desktop becomes a service.

Three families cover most of the market. VDI gives each user a full desktop VM on central infrastructure. Session-based virtualization (RDS) hosts many users as sessions on shared Windows Server instances instead, trading isolation for density. DaaS is either of those, just run by a provider on subscription. There is a fourth, local desktop virtualization, a VM running on the user's own machine, but that solves developer and lab problems, not enterprise delivery.
The reasons keep repeating. Data centralization, so files never live on a laptop that gets lost or stolen. Device independence, so any endpoint, BYOD included, becomes a viable workstation. Operational leverage, patching one image instead of a thousand PCs. Workforce flexibility, onboarding and remote work without shipping a single box of hardware. Security cuts both ways here: centralizing desktops also centralizes everything that now has to be protected, which is exactly why the access layer ends up deciding whether any of this was actually a good idea.
Session-based RDS wins on density and cost when users are just running standard business apps. VDI wins when isolation, OS-level compatibility, or per-user customization actually matter.
